12 Months of Sunshine!

Well hello 2017!!! How amazing it is to see you!

As many of you may know, I began a blog some years back that I called “If I Die Today, I Think You Should Know.” This blog was something I created in efforts to share experiences, positivity, knowledge, and life lessons with the blog world (mostly friends and family) that were centered around the chance that if I weren’t alive tomorrow, I would want everyone to know those things before I left this earth. These previous posts were from a much younger, much more naïve place in my life, but still offer a breath of fresh air on the crazy world we live in. They’re still loaded on this blog site and I would still implore you to check them out if you need a good pick-me-up! With over a year passed since I last wrote an entry, and with a new year sparkling in all of our eyes right now, I wanted to re-create and re-define my blog this year.

Thus with 2017 now in the palms of all of our hands, I bring to you:
12 Months of Sunshine: posts to share your light with yourself and your world!

As chaos, hard to bear news stories, political, racial, and discriminatory happenings continue to unfold before us, I feel that it is imparative that we each examine how we as individuals may be able to positively influence our immediate surroundings, loved ones, strangers, communities, and personal mentality for the better.

I am a firm believe that within each of us lies a light; a ray of sunshine. Some have a bright light, some a small flame, some a dim sparkle, but nonetheless, everyone has light that they can share with others, if only they so consciously chose.

I often hear others say (as well as think to myself) ‘how will I really make a difference?’ Or ‘how can just making changes to my own actions really change the world?’

But I feel that that is the key right there! If each of us had the mentality of ‘let me try to do things a little differently today and see what results may come’ that our lives, our personal head spaces, and our entire world, could truly be a better place.

What if every day we woke up and consciously decided to smile more?

What if every day we woke up and consciously decided to give compliments to just three people throughout the day?

What if every day we woke up and consciously decided to share our sunshine with the rest of the world?

If each and every day, or even for just a couple of days during our week, we woke up with intention to live more positively or make small changes towards doing this, we WOULD make a difference; not only for ourselves, but for everyone we come in contact with on a daily basis.

For this 12 Months of Sunshine, I am going to write on a theme every month and share experiences relating to that theme; each theme having to do with “sharing my sunshine” with the world to better myself and my surroundings. My hope is that through stories and through this blog that not only will I hold myself accountable to live a better, more intentioned, positive life, but that others will get the idea to join forces with me and do the same!

JANUARY THEME- “Clear Sky and Goals Set High!”
Free your mind of outside distractions and make a list of achievable goals for your upcoming year.

Clear Sky: This can mean “clearing your skies” of anything that is negative in your life or no longer serving a purpose for being the most positive, most healthy ‘you’ you can be!

I have had many friends in my life struggling with sobriety lately. It really is disheartening looking back on the last year and how many loved ones or mutual friends I know that have suffered from addiction, or heart-breakingly enough, even lost their lives to it. What would parties and night-life spots look like if more people were sober, rather than under the influence?

So for 2017, my clear sky means to start this month off with a clear mind, free from alcohol or substances. I have found from personal experiences that adding in these things to the mix of life really only clouds your mind from free, healthy thinking and living. I enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail or what have you just as much as anyone else, but for at least a month, I am going to remove these from my life. What will a sober night at the club or a party really be like? I don’t remember because I haven’t had one of those in quite sometime. It will be an eye-opening challenge to see things with a completely clear mind.

Goals Set High: What goals have you had in mind to reach, but just haven’t made them tangible to your life yet?

With it being a brand new year, I took the time to sit down and reflect on what positive things I accomplished and experienced from 2016, and what goals I want to reach, or things I want to change for 2017. I am a firm believer that putting thoughts, feelings, or goals down on physical paper that you narrate them into existence. One is able to go back and re-read or re-define the goals whenever they may chose.

For me, I highlighted all of my accomplishments and successes of 2016, looking at only the positive, wonderful things that happened, and leaving the negative, or unhappy things in the midst of the previous year.

Things happened that I learned from and grew from, but I don’t need to hold onto those with a fresh new year and fresh new start. I consciously make the choice to leave the past in the past, and look forward to the future; setting all of my goals high and my mind into drive to achieve those goals.

Let’s wrap it up!

1.    January’s theme is Clear Sky and Goals Set High!

2.    Find a way of clearing your life from something negative, be it substances, a person, a job, something in your home that bothers you, etc. Anything that isn’t positively serving your life anymore, get rid of it! Even if it’s just one small thing!
3.    Make a list of achievable goals that you want to set for yourself this year and make a brief plan of how you’d like to go about achieving them! Putting an action plan down on paper is one of the best starts to making something happen.
4.    Remember that this blog is about 12 months of sunshine, so find your inner light and share as much of it as you can with any and everyone you come across!

Every single day, we wake up and continue writing the stories of our lives. What will the next pages of your book look like? What adventures would you like to see in your next chapter?

A friend of mine named Candace recently posted a photo on her instagram with this quote as part of her caption:“We’re all just growing together in this terribly confusing garden. We just gotta keep facing the sun.”

I hope and pray that 12 Months of Sunshine will only help to make the next year of your story the absolute best it can possibly be!

Living in the world, while trying to follow by faith in the Word. Yep: the struggle is real.

In the midst of our chaotic, busy, go-go-go mentality type world that we live in these days, I wanted to take a minute of reflection of some deep rooted pain I’ve been experiencing , and the freedom and wisdom I’ve gained from enduring it . I wanted to take a moment to write about that, and share the growth, strength,  and fruitful blessings that are available  to all of us through the power of The Cross. It’s a fight I’ve been battling through, and I pray someone else may be able to relate while reading this page, and be inspired while leaving it.   Much of my life I have practiced the habit of ignoring God’s signs,  pushes, and plans for my life; of being completely and totally self-indulgent.  I’ve chosen my ways over His time and time and time again. Not because I have any desire to disobey Him; my heart is set on quite literally the opposite. But this world that we live in doesn’t encourage us to walk by faith… to follow “Emmanuel: God with us.” The world ...

Feelings Lately.

This songs words touch me so greatly. One can only guess who it reminds me of. </3 Remember, no matter how easy you think it will be, or how ready you are for it, goodbyes are never easy; never . I just have to keep thinking it's not goodbye, only see ya' later.  But goodness; it is so much easier said than done. So that is that. If I die today, I would want you to know&hear this. xo, Jell.

Wonderful Happiness.

Yesterday, I worked on monologues, read some plays, had time at the gym, and fasted. I fasted for a church wide pray and fast day and nearly died; literally. But kept my prayers going and ended up makin it through 24 successful hours without eating! I was very proud of myself :). Note to everyone: if you are fasting, do not go do an intense work out. Not a good idea. The entire Turner Center almost saw me pass out in the middle of the gym yesterday. Ha. It wasn't funny then, but it is now. :) I came home last night and was planning to have a quiet night in by myself and be a bit of a bum.  However, I decided to have a couple friends over for tea and talk :) Kelly and Christian came and chilled for a little while and then had to leave to go to Wal Mart. Though I was planning to stay in for the evening, they told me to come, so I did, got some groceries, and then they talked me into spending the night with them! We hung out, made nachos and brownie bites at 12:30 am when I was ab...
